The Welsh Goddess Blodeuwedd, whose name means "Flower Face" is very often associated with the Spring. Her story can be found in the stories of the Mabinogi, a collection of ancient Welsh tales, divided into four parts or 'branches'. She was created by the 2 Wizards Math and Gwydion, out of plants gathered from the High Forest. Oak, Broom and Meadowsweet, and was created to be the wife (whether she wanted to be or not!) of Llew Llaw Gyffes.
Llew had been cursed by his mother, the Goddess Arianrhod, who was ashamed of him, and had cursed him to never have a name, to never take up arms or be a knight, or to be able to take a human wife, or ever be King! To break this curse, the Wizards kept tricking Arianrhod, and eventually created him a 'wife' from flowers! It is said that like a flower, she always wanted to have her face in the sun.
Llew fell in love with this beautiful woman at first sight, and married her. And though at first Blodeuwedd appeared content with the arrangement, she soon felt very unhappy and lonely. She did not really love this husband that she had been created for. One day, whilst out walking, she met the handsome hunter Gronw Pebyr, the Lord of Penilyn, and they fell passionately in love, meeting in the forest in secret! Realising they could never be free to marry, they plot to kill Llew.....The plot fails, and the lovers of course, do not get away with this betrayal; Gronw is killed, and Blodeuwedd's punishment is to be turned into an Owl, forever denied the sun and forced forever to lead a solitary life.
